Adults Bee-like with no functional mouthparts-short lived 3-5 days.
Main host cattle-rarely horse, sheep, goats.
In europe flies around spring (H. lineatum) summer (H. bovis) May to July.
Flight range limited to around 5km.
Eggs fixed to hair, in H. Lineatum 6 or more in line.
100 or so eggs per fly, these hatch in 3-7 days, larva penetrate skin using proteolytic enzymes.
H. lineatum through winter as L1 (first larval stage) in submucosa oesophagus, H. bovis L1 in epidural fat of lumbar region.
Second larval stage reach subcutaneous tissue of back February-mid April (H. lineatum) March-July for H. bovis.
Warble 25mm long from this third larval stage exits and pupates in soil.
Controlled by Spring dressing March-July and Autumn dressing September-November.
Coumaphos-Co-Ral, Phosmet, Famphur, Trichlorfon, Ivermectin used as pour-ons, dips, sprays or feed additives.
