A male (top) and female (bottom) mosquito. Sexes can be readily seperated by studying the antennae, in males they are plumose (feathery) whilst in females they are pilose (not feathery). A male mosquito is able to locate a female by tuning in to the frequency of the females wing beat. Different species have different wing beats. As far as it is known, females are unable to tune into high pithed frequencies like the males, for this reason the electric buzzers sold to repel biting mosquitoes do not work, they may even attract males. Males however do not bite and therefore do not infect hosts with malaria.
