This image shows the differences between two genera of mosquitos; the Anopheles on the left, and the Aedes on the right. The adult female Anopheles resting stance is at an angle to the surface on which it rests. Anopheles culicifacies is an exception. The Aedes rest parallel to the surface. The eggs shown are those of an Anopheles mosquitoe. Sculpturing on the egg surface can be seen. The eggs are laid singularly in water. Anopheles eggs have floats, made from the exochorion, on either side. Aedes eggs are also laid singularly but have no floats. The bottom image shows a fourth, (last) larval stage of an Anopheles mosquitoe which lies parallel to the waters surface and has no long respiratory siphon as seen in both Aedes and Culex mosquitoes.
