This shows the aquatic stage of a mayfly, family Ephemeroptera. This nymph is a Ecdyonurus. The image to the right is a structure found on the underside of the nymphs body. It acts as a type of sucker giving the nymph purchase in fast flowing waters. The body is dorso-ventrally flattened to further aid life in fast flowing (lotic) water.
